Kyle Kuzma agrees to a 3 year, $40 million dollar extension with the Lakers.

It looks like Kyle Kuzma is going to be a Laker for the time being. The 25 year old power forward agreed to a 3 year, $40 million extension with the defending champions on Sunday night. Kuzma’s new contract will have a player option for the 2023-24 season.

The Lakers had until Monday to come to a deal for an extension for Kuzma and they were able to get it done. Had Kuzma not signed the extension, he was set to become a restricted free agent in the upcoming off-season. The Lakers would’ve been able to match any offer made by teams; however, it may have been worth much more money than $40 million.

This multi year extension makes it easier for the Lakers to trade Kuzma if they ultimately decide to part ways with him. However, the Lakers are hoping that Kuzma will make a giant leap this year. Kuzma had a fairly disappointing season last year averaging 12.8 points in 61 games compared to 18.7 points in 70 games in 2019.

Kuzma’s teammates have his back and are rooting for his success. LeBron James believes that Kyle Kuzma will be the NBA player that will make a giant leap this season. Anthony Davis states that Kuzma will no longer “have that contract anxiety for the whole year.”

This is ultimately a good deal for both sides. Entering his fourth year in the league and third year playing with LeBron James, chemistry will only get better between the two. All Kuzma needs is his confidence back and he will pick up right where he left off in 2019.
